Sony NEX-FS100 – Professional Camcorder Announced

Sony NEX-FS100 35mmSony has just released details on its new professional grade NEX camcorder – the NEX-FS100.  This new camcorder is the big brother to the popular NEX-VG10 and accepts all E-Mount lenses, as well as A-Mount lenses with the use of an adapter. Records AVCHD Full HD.

The camera is more than 6 months away from its ship date!!

The NEX-FS100 is a new E-mount professional camcorder equipped with a Super 35mm CMOS sensor specifically designed for shooting motion pictures ideal for commercials and music videos, independent films as well as action scenes in budget drama, for example. The large-format sensor’s high sensitivity enables it to produce footage with shallow depth of field similar to that of a film camera.

On the 23rd of March expect that the new Sony NXCAM Super 35mm Cine Compact camera with removable lens will officially be called the FS100? You can also bet money that regional editions of the Sony NXCAM will be sold as the FS100E, FS100P, FS100U etc but will come to be universally called the Sony FS100 NXCAM camera. NB theses are tips we received and sources have a great track record so far.

The Sony NEX-FS100 sports an APS-C / Super35mm format sensor and is capable of recording 1920 x 1080 60p at 28Mbps.  The NEX-FS100 will also capture at 30p and 24p frame rates – and it offers the ability to shoot with a proper 1/48s shutter speed when recording 24p video.  Additionally, the NEX-FS100 includes built-in controls for over- and under-cranking footage at full 1920 x 1080 resolution. The NEX-FS100 is equipped with an Exmor Super 35 CMOS Sensor specifically designed for shooting commercials and music videos, as well as action scenes in budget dramas. The sensor shoots 1080p60 content at up to 28Mbps to SD, Memory Stick (or an optional 128GB SSD) or can output uncompressed 4:2:2 footage over HDMI, while you can keep an eye on everything on a tiltable 3.5in LCD display.

The NEX-FS100 features an articulating 3.5-inch LCD (921k-dot resolution) and a viewfinder tube with a 1.2x magnication.  The modular design of the NEX-FS100 offers a detachable grip, handle and viewfinder tube.  Additionally, the angle of the grip can be adjusted at a variety of angles to facilitate specific shooting requirements.

“The NEX-FS100E NXCAM Super 35mm camcorder enables budget content creators and videographers to experience a new level of creative expression,” said Bill Drummond, Strategic Marketing Manager, of Sony Professional. “Sony has responded to professional user feedback to create this new camcorder with an ergonomically designed body and accessories offering really flexibility in use.” . The NEX-FS100 records to SDXC or Memory Stick PRO Duo cards – along the option of recording to Sony’s dedicated HXR-FMU 128GB memory module.  Both recording mediums can be used for instant backup if needed.

Sony has priced the NEX-FS100 at $5850 (no lens) and $6550 with lens.  No official word on availability dates yet though. The NEX-FS100E uses the Sony E-mount interchangeable lens system used in the alpha series NEX-5, 3 and NEX-VG10E Handycam. It will also allow for the A-Mount lenses to be used with an adaptor due to its very short flange back distance (the distance between lens mount surface and sensor surface). However this budget model, only comes with the camera body (seen below), with the lens kit costing you a bit more. We are awaiting a reply from Sony regarding the UK pricing, but in the US the NEX-FS100E will cost you $5,850 with the lens kit costing another $700 – though for that you do get the 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 lens, viewfinder tube and shotgun microphone too.
