Rob Dougan – Furious Angels (2002)

by Milos Itic on April 8, 2011

This album is the masterpiece of a sad atmosphere and about living and love in room with no place and no light. This is among greatest concept albums of all time. They are: sadness, death, darkness, and other weird mind  subconscious things. Album on its own, creates subjective genre. I can listen to it always, and again, it’s seems like I need more. This is one dark story of mind envelop in different chapters.

Rob Dougan album Furious angels 01Yes, this is a concept album. Why? Because they have a story, they have a line, they drive you into insanity of antihero of his own faith. The most popular song “Clubbed to death” is used for most complex movie “Matrix”. They find each other in complexity, but the story is completely different – story of film and story of music. The album “Furious Angels” is for me more complicated and artistic then film.

Rob Dougan, also known as Rob D (born 1965 Sydney, Australia) is a genre-blending music composer. Mixing elements of orchestral music, trip hop, and bluesy vocals, his work is tangentially repeatable to electronic music. He was known primarily for his breakthrough 1995 single “Clubbed to Death (Kurayamino Variation)”, popularized by 1999’s The Matrix soundtrack. “Clubbed to Death” was released on his debut album Furious Angels in 2001, seven years after its initial release.

Furious Angels is the debut album by Rob Dougan, released in June 2002 in the United Kingdom and in July 2003 in the United States and Europe. It was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package. FURIOUS ANGELS was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Boxed Or Special Limited Edition Package.

Furious Angels was originally released as a 14 tracks single-disc album for worldwide circulation and 15 tracks for its UK edition. Somewhere in 2003, it was then repackaged with a double discs whereby the first disc contains tracks with vocals and the second ones with more instrumental and lengthy.

Rob Dougan grew up in Sydney, Australia, where he got involved with music . He show great love for  films, and when he left school he studied to be an actor at NIDA
[National Institute of Dramatic Arts], where people like Baz Luhrmann, Cate Blanchet, and Mel Gibson, at one time or another, studied. But he got kicked out for his violent behavior and for being unstable, usually directed towards himself, . The same week he got kicked out, he left Australia and flew out to London, England. He started working in clothes shops and washing dishes similar jobs. Eventually, he started doing music more and more, which lead to signing with Mo’Wax, a groundbreaking U.K. label owned by James Lavelle that included artists, such as, DJ Shadow and Money Mark. He released the single,“Clubbed to Death” [under the guise of Clubbed To Death], and the NME picked up on it. Shortly, thereafter, he started working on his first album. The album involved a lot of orchestral players, and was so far left-ofcenter that it took quite some time to get finished.

For him, lyrics are most important thing in music. He is too serious  about that. There Rob Dougan album Furious angels 01is something about Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen and their songwriting that is important to him. “Some people can listen to a tune and not care so much that the lyrics are just meaningless…I can’t! I lose faith in an artist who has no meaning to its lyrics. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Bob Marley’s songs are really simple and direct, but they mean more. Coldplay has a song called, “Yellow,” the one that goes “…and it was all yellow,” and  the singer [Chris Martin] has said that the lyrics are just nonsense that fit the tune. That may have its place, but it’s not for me. I sometimes spend months making sure the words are with merit, and if they’re not, I don’t use the song. I can’t watch at one moment a war in Iraq and then turn around and listen to music that I know is completely without meaning”.

Random motives of the album:

  • A blind man driving in my car
  • There’s just no room
  • Run me down and race away from me
  • It won’t be long. ‘Till suddenly

I wanna run, like the blood from a wound

I will run through the lyrics, and this is my opinion only. It isn’t fact or truth. In this sad randevu and full hall of inner deja-vus, till got option left for one possibility: “Furious angels will bring you back to me”.  Main motive is “You were gone before I hit the ground”. And there is love, anger and lost: “You’ll feel the cold of my gun hit your head” Metaphor of Murder. Everyday walk, on the streets, on the club, on the flat, on the job and on the oblivion.

You walk in the room.
You take your seat.
You don’t turn around.
You don’t see me.

I’ll make him go

And then two voices or more in the head and we will see Main protagonist of the story, don’t know what to do and what will be next. It’s time to go, for forever but he is still not ready for total “forgiven” in her mind.

And thinks, cause I’m saying nothing, that I’ve got nothing to say

“Can I stay and say nothing at all, at all” gives new moments of the screenplay. New complicity and labyrinth. Plot is melting. Words like: I want to walk into your grave, fall into my arms, stay with me and and asking for forgiveness.  We don’t know the past, what happened in previous years. The greatest misery came from mistakes in past. And then final resume of the moment. What they can get and what is enough. “Can I stay and say nothing at all, at all”, words aren’t not necessary, words are lost gone. To float far away into eternal space with few words that mean nothing at all.

I want to try the best and the best is death

Is the Man form the songs the greatest Loner of all time. In big misery, in big depression, without company, not alive and not dead. “And I’d die for some company” and “Life is a game fit only for fools”.

A drunken symphony that gently leads you to sit and be still with me

And then something different. In deep misery deep voice, in Tom Waits manor, “Drinking song”.  There is one moment in “maybe” world, then someone its to realize something and someone will know it. The story of the last chapters of weep and kiss.

Two hopeless dreamers

We’re one and the same – two birds adrift on the wind. He find someone who still love. In this world with millions population of many different types of “Mankind”, its most hard to find anyone so close to you. He is find it. And He  still have faith and as life slips away let’s keep believing …

This is a story about lyrics of this magnificent concept album. But the most important for anything that read this is to understand anything is the silent lyrics of nstrumental tracks. This is landscape of fast, slow and sad thoughts.

  • Prelude
  • Will you follow me?
  • Clubbed to Death
  • Instrumental
  • Pause

Who is this “Man”. Who is Rob Dougan?

His music has been heard by millions worldwide; however, very few know the face of Rob Dougan album Furious angels 01the man behind the music. Described by U.K. music publication, NME, as an “enigma”, Dougan’s music has appeared in high-profile blockbusters, such as The Matrix and Matrix: Reloaded, national TV ads, videogames and TV shows. His debut album, Furious Angels, is a brutal mix of pop, orchestral string arrangements, hip-hop, electronic and rock ‘n roll, re-forged into a specteresque soundscape, that owes as much to the future, as it does to the past.Think Clockwork Orange  and The lLost Highway you’re halfway there.

“In 1990, Rob Dougan’s friend Rollo brought him from Australia to London. From 1991 to 1995, “Rob D” was a Producer and remix artist. In 1994 his remixes started charting in the UK. He also released his first single, “Hard Times”. In 1995, his hit single “Clubbed to Death” gave him a recognised name in the UK dance club scene. He produced almost a dozen remixes of it, including the fan-favourite “Kurayamino Variation”. His label Mo’Wax Records was so pleased they commissioned the follow-up “Clubbed to Death 2″ (later the bonus track on the album). CTD2 Initially appeared on the James Lavelle disc of the 1996 DJ mix compilation Cream Live 2.

“Furious Angels” was not released on Mowax but Dougan eventually released it as a single in 1998 with his new label Cheeky Records. Dougan worked for the following six years, doing remixes and licensing his tracks, in order to self-produce the album which was backed by a full orchestra and a full choir. In 1999, his exposure increased dramatically when his “Clubbed To Death (Kurayamino Variation)” was featured on the soundtrack of The Matrix. He has also provided remixes of songs by U2, Moby and Kylie Minogue, and contributed two more tracks to the soundtrack of 2003’s Matrix sequel The Matrix Reloaded, Château and Kung Fu (A shortened version of “Furious Angels” made for “The Matrix Reloaded”). Also on The Matrix Reloaded DVD the background movie has the I’m Not Driving Anymore Instrumental soundtrack.

In 2002 in the UK, and 2003 in the rest of the world, Dougan released his debut album Furious Angels to critical acclaim and some surprise from the new tone of his work, as well as from his own Leonard Cohen-esque gravel-voiced vocals. Later in 2003, a two-disc re-release of Furious Angels featured all-instrumental versions on the second disc. In 2006, Dougan was reportedly writing “a couple of songs” for Sugababes (for whom he produced the single “Too Lost in You”), and working on two albums of his own — one original, one classical.

As of April 27, 2008 Rob Dougan is mentioned in a wine blog as an owner of a wine vineyard La Peira En Damaisela, leaving numerous questions about the supposed 2 albums he had been working on. A short film made for jewellery designer Solange Azagury-Patridge, “The Letter”, directed by Laurence Dunmore and starring Thandie Newton and Jason Isaacs features new music by Rob Dougan; the short film, however, does not mention the title of the song

This is an epic work of panoramic genius. Rob Dougan is a rather odd musician. He says he’s not particularly interested in music, for a start. lyrics is essentially dark and full with sorrow.

The short strings intro and piano part are excerpts from the first movement of Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations. The opening string figure from Gustav Holst’s “Jupiter” movement of The Planets is sampled by Dougan throughout this song. The pitch of this figure is modulated down a tone, to fit with the existing harmony. The classical part of Clubbed to Death 2 is built around Chopin’s Prelude No. 4 in E-minor (from Preludes, opus 28). The piece was played in the classic film The Amazing Mr. X (1948).

Bloody Broadway highway with symphonic and epic voices from bellow of someone grave, morbid and ironic Tom Waits, melodic Nick Cave, dark Leonard Cohen, new age troubadour and his dramatic operetta, big show for small viewers, violently, bitter taste, fully fleshed-out strings, exploding rage, great depression, neo-cabaret, noir one table lunge, mad dirigent and his tuxedo conducting orchestration, with repetitive, relentless, unchanging beats and lyrics, Rob Dougan present: “Furious Angels“.

Lyrics:

Furious Angels

Like a sentence of death,
I got no options left,
I’ve got nothing to show now.

I’m down on the ground,
I’ve got seconds to live,
and you can’t go now.

‘Cause love, like an invisible bullet shot me down
and I’m bleeding, yeah I’m bleeding
and if you go, furious angels will bring you back to me.
They will bring you back to me.

You’re a dirty needle,
you’re in my blood and there’s no curing it, yeah.
I wanna run, like the blood from a wound
to a place you can’t see me.
‘Cause love, like a blow to the head has left me stunned
and I’m reeling, yeah I’m reeling
and if you go, furious angels will bring you back to me.

You’re a cold piece of steel between my ribs
and there’s no saving me, yeah.
And I can’t get up,
from this wet crimson bed that you made for me.
That you made for me!
‘Cause love like a knife in the back has cut me down
and I’m bleeding, yeah I’m bleeding,
and if you go, angels will run to defend me, to defend me.

‘Cause I can’t get up, I’m as cold as a stone,
I can feel the life fade from me.
I’m down on the ground, I’ve got seconds to live,
and what’s that waits for me, oh that waits for me!
‘Cause love like a sentence of death, left me stunned,
and I’m reeling, yeah I’m reeling,
and if you go, furious angels will bring you back to me

Left Me For Dead

You didn’t stop to look round
You were gone before I hit the ground
You went on you’re way
And no prayer was said
(Are) You left me for dead
You didn’t cover my face
I didn’t merit a communal grave
You set me aside
And no tears were shed
(Are) You left me for dead
And I say I won’t stop no ’til hell is your home
There’s no where to hide (no nowhere)
You’ll feel the cold of my gun at you’re head
Ah you left me for dead
And it’s not like you stayed by my side or you called me a priest
You searched through my mouth to check for gold teeth
you were pawning my shoes as i bled

You left me for, left me for, left me, for
Dead

You kept on taking your time
Until it was certain i couldn’t survive
Judas remained, you turned and fled
You left me for dead
And it didn’t trouble your mind
It did not disturb you to see me decline
You turned out my lights
You put me to bed
You left me for dead
(And i say) that I won’t rest my head until hell is your home
You’ll think that you’re safe but oh no
You’ll feel the cold of my gun hit your head
Ah you left me for dead
And you didn’t stay close to me didn’t stay by my side
I was choking in blood as delight filled your eyes
You’re gonna burn for each word that you said
Cause you
Left me for, left me for, left me me for
Dead

But I don’t want to search no more
There’s nowhere to hide
So why don’t you come quietly my love
I wanted to say, to say that you sure proved the death of me
Now i’ve reached a dead end, and i can’t go back
But if i’m going down you’ll come with me…

You didn’t stop to look round
You were gone before I hit the ground
You went on you’re way
And no prayer was said
(Are) You left me for dead
You didn’t cover my face
I didn’t merit a communal grave
You set me aside
And no tears were shed
(Are) You left me for dead

I’m Not Driving Anymore

You tell me I can’t slow down
you tell me where I’ve gotta be
I speed into the darkness
but I swear that I can’t see a thing in front of me
You know its true
I’m not driving anymore,
I can’t keep up with you.

You’re closing in behind me
Well I’ve got headlights in my eyes,
Don’t you get too close to me
Can’t you see that we’ll collide,
and end up casualties
there’s just no room
I’m not driving anymore,
I can’t keep up with you

So leave me on my own,
Run me down and race away from me
I’ve got nowhere to go to,
I don’t think I can get back on my feet,
back on my feet

It came right out of nowhere
Eyes wide and terrified,
I can’t put my brakes on,
And I can’t swerve to save your life
cause then I’ll lose control,
and I can’t choose
I’m not driving anymore
I can’t keep up with you

So leave me on my own
Run me down and race away from me
I’ve got no where to go to
I don’t think I can get back on my feet,
back on my feet.

Get me out of harm’s way,
Can’t you see I’m paralyzed,
I wanna fade out gracefuly,
but you keep keeping me alive
to face another day,
can’t you see I’m through
I’m not driving anymore,
I can’t keep up with you.
Can’t keep up with you

Tell me how long have I got,
I wanna end this earthly toil
Till this diet life expires
I wanna go swimming in the soil
and not come up for breath
sit in God’s room
I’m not driving anymore,
I can’t keep up with you.

I’m unfit for consumption
I don’t know how to play my part,
I swear I’m all alone in this thing,
a blind man driving in my car,
into oblivion
let it come soon.
I’m not driving anymore,
I can’t keep up with you

There’s Only Me

You’re all I want.
You’re all I need.
You’re all I’ve got.
All I see.
It won’t be long.
‘Till suddenly
you’ll find he’s gone.

And you’ll turn around and see.
There’s only me,
for whom there’s silence in your heart.
There’s only me,
waiting patient to the last.

You wait and see.
One day your love will surely start.
You’ll turn around,
you’ll find when everyone departs.
There’s only me.

You walk in the room.
You take your seat.
You don’t turn around.
You don’t see me.
I’ll make him go.
You’ll find one day he’ll disappear.
You’ll turn around.
And find that not a soul is here.

There’s only me,
for whom there’s silence in your heart.
There’s only me,
waiting patient to the last

You wait and see.
One day your love will surely start.
You’ll turn around,
you’ll find when everyone departs.
There’s only me.

There is only me, only me, only me…

Nothing At All

I want to be still
I want to walk into your grave
where I can shelter in peace
until all our cares have blown away
Yeah

Let the whole world fall away
and fall into my arms
stay with me
I don’t know how long we’ve got left
and so i’m asking you
to forgive me

I learn as I go
to float far away
into silence
and just watch your face
and find some kind of grace
in that quiet bliss

Can I stay and say nothing at all, at all

Where will we go when we get old
when the bustle and the noise
get too frightning
when each and every angry word
is banished to the past
that when I think

We’ll learn as we go
to float far away
into silence
and I’ll watch your face
and find patience and grace
in each line there

Work each day
all for nothing at all, at all
and the few words I say
they mean nothing at all at all

Will you walk into the grave with me
will you leave this empty world
soft and wistful
to sink into the dark, dank earth
and never reappear would be blissful

To float far away
into eternal space
and God’s silence
where I’ll watch your face
and find patience and grace
in each line there

Drift away and end up nothing at all at all
find the grace to be nothing at all at all
fade away and end up nothing at all
at all at all at all

Born Yesterday

She thinks that I was born yesterday.
She thinks that I go out with the tide and fade at the end of the day.
She thinks my hairs aren’t numbered.
And when pricked I don’t cry in pain.

Just cause I smile like a child born yesterday.
And she thinks that I was born in another age.
She thinks that I get up with the sun and dream my life away.
And thinks, cause I’m saying nothing, that I’ve got nothing to say.

And cause I smile like a child born yesterday,
She thinks that I was born yesterday.
She thinks that I came into this world (born without a name).
And she thinks that I’m going nowhere cause I stay at one place.
Just cause I smile like a child born yesterday.

Speed Me Towards Death

Speed me towards death
Cause I just can’t wait for her
I want her to come
I want to embrace her
I’ve decided it’s life
That I don’t like – that I don’t like
Speed me towards death
Cause I think she’d go for me
They say time is the killer
I can’t wait he’s too slow for me
I’ve tried all the rest
How I want to try the best
And I’d die for some company
I’d die for some company

I don’t want to die slowly
I don’t want to decay
I want to be chosen
I want to be made
I don’t want to die lonely and weary of life
I will not be earthbound
I’m gonna fly

So speed me towards death
Cause I want her to taste me
You know my senses are dead
I want her to awaken me
I’ve realized that this world (at it’s best)
Is just a prelude to the next
And it’s not one I want to hear
It’s not one I want to read

I don’t want to die slowly
I don’t want to decay
I want to be chosen
I want to be made
I don’t want to die lonely and weary of life
I will not be earthbound
I ‘m gonna fly

For life is a game fit only for fools
It’s a horse that can’t win
In a race rigged to lose

So speed me towards death

Drinking Song

I want to weave a musical spell
That leaves you unwell and thinking of me everyday
I want to play you a tune that leaves you marooned and troubled
Each time I’m away
Is there a melody – that could lead you to me – like a lullabies child lead to sleep?
So for one moment in time, you’d find that you’re mine
And softly I’d kiss you and weep

I want to write a simple song that’s so frequently sung
That you call me to have the thing banned
Who’s sound so endears that whole nations cheer and sigh
When you take my hand
Is there a melody – that could lead you to me – like a lullabied child lead to sleep?
So for one moment in time you’d find that you’re mine
And softly I’d kiss you and weep

‘Cause I’m a gambler that just wants to lose and be allowed to leave
I’m a traveler – with one last mile my journey is complete
I’m like a swallow that wants one long last look, before flying east
Last on my list – and then I quit – to kiss your lips and weep

I want to play a silver note that fills you with hope
And tames you to feed from my hand
A turquoise chord that invites you to soar
And fly… to a faraway land
A symphony that gently leads you to sit and be still with me
And grief doesn’t frighten me
As its worst it delights me
‘Cause I want to kiss you and weep

For I’m a gambler that just wants to lose and be allowed to leave
I’m a traveler – with one last mile my journey is complete
I’m like a swallow that wants one long last look before flying east
Last on my list – and then I quit – to kiss your lips and weep
Is there a melody – that could lead you to me – like a lullubied child to sleep?
So for one moment in time you’d find that you’re mine
And softly I’d kiss you and weep

So for one moment in time you’d find that you’re mine
And softly I’d kiss you and weep

One And The Same (Coda)

well I
keep on waiting
for you to say
that your wait is over
and you’ve woken up in clover
yeah
we’re one and the same
seems like
it’s never ending
but good lights the way
let’s keep believing
that we’re one
that we’re one and the same
one and the same
salvation see it lights the way
each time we see heaven
it slips away
so keep believing
don’t come undone
keep on dreaming
our day will come
we’re one and the same
two birds adrift on the wind
as life slips away
let’s keep believing
that we’re one and the same
one and the same
let’s start living
seize the day
can’t miss heaven
it’s a step away
let’s keep persisting
another day
let’s keep believing
come what may
we’re one and the same
two hopeless dreamers
wasting away
god has an order
we’ll find a way
one and the same
one and the same

Thank you so much for this!
I’ve been interested in Rob Dougan ever since I discovered him 2 years ago through The Matrix Soundtrack. I love his work and I’m always happy to find about more about him, since he’s a really mysterious and fascinating artist.
I’m still suprised he’s never gained a popularity and renown I think he deserves for. Therefore I am really grateful for the effort you took to write this article.
The article might require some editing, but generally it’s very rich and interesting. If you ever need a hand with something like this, I’m your man!
Keep up the good work!
